This song was contributed by Kangy King who claims we used to sing it in the Hunters whereas I can only ever remember singing the mucky Cuckoo song to the same tune. I wanted to tack the Cuckoo onto the end of it but Kangy wouldn't let me as he didn't want it polluted with filth. He is really a sentimental old fart!
How lovely and delightful is a fair summer's morn,
With the hills and the valleys all covered in corn,
And the blackbirds and thrushes sing in every green tree,
And the lark doth sing melodious at the breaking of the day.
And the lark doth sing melodious,
And the lark doth sing melodious,
And the lark doth sing melodious,
At the breaking of the day.
A sailor and his true love were walking one day,
Said the sailor to his true love "I am bound for away.
I'm bound for the Indies where the loud cannons roar,
And I must go and leave my Mary the girl I adore".
I must go and leave my Mary,
I must go and leave my Mary,
I must go and leave my Mary,
She’s the girl that I adore.
A ring from her finger she hastily drew.
Saying take it dear Willy that our love may be true.
And as he embraced her sad tears they did fall,
Singing "May I go along with you?" “Ah no my love fairwell"
Singing “May I go along with you?"
Singing “May I go along with you?"
Singing “May I go along with you?"
"Ah no my love fairwell".
And now I must leave you I can no longer stay,
For the tops'l is hoisted and the anchor's away.
And the good ship lies waiting on the fast ebbing tide,
And if ever I return again I will make you my bride.
And if ever I return again,
And if ever I return again,
And if ever I return again,
I will make you my bride.
(Pause to wipe away tears)
