Camille Saint-Saëns

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 - 1921) was a French classical composer, organist, pianist and conductor. His 3rd symphony, also known as The Organ Symphony is probably his best known although his Carnival of the Animals is also popular.

The track I have chosen as my favourite is the final movement of his 3rd symphony which begins with a long chord from the organ which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention.
It is played here by Simon Preston with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by James Levine.

A video of the complete organ symphony can be found here but I am unsure what orchestra is playing it at the BBC proms conducted by Paavo Järvi.

Camille Saint-Saëns discography can be found here.
