Antonio Carlos Joabim (1927 - 1994) was a Brazilian pianist and song writer who is famous for spreading the Bossa Nova round the world and then inducted it into jazz. 'The Girl from Ipanema' is probably his most well known song but others such as 'Felicidade', 'Insensatez' and 'Meditation' will also be familiar to most.
The track of 'The Girl from Ipanema' below is sung first by Joao Gilberto in Portugese then the glorious, very sexy, ever so slightly off key voice of Astrud Gilberto comes in in English. Joabim had some help in composing it from Vinicius DeMorees and Noman Gimbel.
The group features Stan Getz on tenor sax, Joabim on piano, Joao Gilberto on guitar, Tommy Williams on bass and Milton Banana on drums and was recorded in New York in 1963.
Joabin's extensive discography can be found here.
