Gabriel Fauré

George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) was an American composer who wrote classical music and jazz classics. His compositions include Rapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and the opera Porgy and Bess.

Gershwin wrote many popular tunes in his era which still remain popular today but I have selected the track below from his classical repertoire. This is from his Piano Concerto in F and is played by Andre Previn who is no mean jazz pianist himself. It is the Allegro agitato with the Pittsburgh Symphony and you will hear many phrases from An American in Paris.

I could not resist a link to the full version of an American in Paris here performed by The Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra from Slovenia. A piano solo from that work is 'I got Rythm' which has become a jazz classic and is performed here by Grigory Gruzman.

Finally we couldn't leave out Rapsody in Blue so here is a link to the full version with Previn and the Pittsburgh.

George Gershwin's discography can be found here.
