Ernest William Fox

Great grandad Fox was born in 1858. He married Elizabeth Jane Bassett in St Johns Church, Bangalore, India in 1880 when she was only 16 years old. He was a corporal in the Royal Engineers at the time and grandad Fox was born in 1883. He had an elder sister, Hilda Margaret. Great grandma Elizabeth later died giving birth to twin boys and Ernest married again to a member of the Jameson whiskey family who was rumoured to be a bible puncher! One of the twins was drowned in Ireland before the family returned to India but grandad Fox decided to stay in the UK.

This photograph is the only known one of him and he died in Nelson, New Zealand in 1936 according to Uncle Sid, however, I have checked the cemetery records for Nelson. An Ernest Fox was buried in Wakapuaka cemetery who died on 30th June 1944 aged 87 ref: WKCE39029_A, plot 029, block 39. This ties in with his birth date of 1858 so it looks likely that this is he. The next time we visit Nelson we will visit his grave.
